PBW is a buffered alkaline detergent that has been brewery proven to be more than just an effective substitute for caustic cleaners. Because of its unique Patent Pending formulation, PBW can out-perform caustic cleaners and still not corrode soft metals. This product does not depend on caustic soda to remove soils, but on active oxygen and mild alkali to do the same job. The activated oxygen in this product helps in reducing “biochemical oxygen demand” (BOD) in the brew house wastewater. This can help reduce the impact that cleaning solutions can have on municipal waste water systems. PBW has been formulated as a “clean in place” (CIP) cleaner and is very effective in removing protein soils found in brew kettles, lauter tuns and fermenters. The surfactant package in this product has been designed to actively defoam at 100 degrees F; however, PBW can be used up to temperatures of 180 degrees F. At colder temperatures the surfactants will not defoam and a slight foaming action is observed. A number of brewers use PBW in cold water as a manual cleaner. The concentrations to remove these soils are typical in the ¾ % to 1½ % range; however, due to soil and water conditions, this concentration will vary. To help in hard water areas, PBW has been formulated with enough chelators to tolerate hard water over 17 grains, which allows for free rinsing. PBW is an excellent choice as a soak cleaner because it does not require heat. In soaking conditions, the only requirement is time and proper concentration. This allows items that have previously been considered impossible to clean (i.e., kegs, heat exchangers, and brass filters) to be cleaned easily.
